ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

Crawlspace is a gallery started by an artist-collective currently based in Mohkínstsis, on the Treaty 7 Territories, Alberta. We focus on supporting and showing new and emerging artists in our space! We are small and just beginning so we appreciate all of the support we have received from the community thus far!

The founders and volunteer staff of Crawlspace are a group of diverse people. Several members identify as queer, trans, disabled, or as belonging to a marginalized racial group. Therefore, our values prioritize protecting not only visitors to the space, but our staff as well.

OUR STORY

Our collective began as a group of friends who wanted to maintain the studio community we had created during our time at school after we graduated. Through a rigorous searching process, we were fortunate enough to secure a space and began settling into our new studios. We quickly realized that we had the opportunity and room to host a gallery. Many of our members have had extensive gallery experience and wanted to shape something of our own with a focus on emerging artists. That said, significant renovations needed to happen before the gallery could begin operating. With hard work, hands-on support from family/friends, and financial/material donations from the community our space was able to open with our first show! As a collective, we had anticipated funding for the construction materials on our own, which would’ve taken many months if not years, and were blown away by the help we received. We are so thankful that we have been able to make this dream a reality. This space is an opportunity for those who don't have as long of a CV to show in a lively and established community. The majority of the artists we have exhibited so far have never had a solo exhibition before, or have never shown outside of a school setting. Crawlspace came together through an active emerging artist community, and we’re excited to continue supporting early, emerging, and self-taught, artists.
